From MaryJanesFarm, located eight miles southeast of Moscow, MaryJane Butters
sells 60 different organic prepared foods and shares the message of simple organic
living with readers of her magazine, newspaper column, websites, and her books:
MaryJane's Ideabook, Cookbook, Lifebook and MaryJane's Farmgirl Wisdom.
Visitors can enjoy the natural experience of her unique bed-and-breakfast wall
tents, or share in the bounty of her farm through her Country Club vegetable
and fruit u-pick system. Produce and eggs from MaryJanesFarm are available at
Otto's Produce; her prepared foods are available at the Moscow Food Co-op; and
her books are available at Bookpeople, all in Moscow.
The founder of MaryJanesFarm and also Moscow's Palouse-Clearwater Environmental
Institute has always been a pioneer. She spent summers watching for fires from
a mountaintop lookout near Weippe, Idaho and was the first woman station guard
at the Moose Creek Ranger Station in Idaho's Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area.
After moving to her farm, she decided to develop new products for locally-grown
organic beans that would help farmers transition to sustainable production. She
began in 1990 with an easily-prepared organic falafel mix. She has been featured
in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers across North
America, as well as Family Circle, Country Home, House & Garden, and
other national magazines. She is also shooting a PBS television series at her
farm.
